Having Problems With Your Garage Door? Here’s What To Do

There are some common garage door troubles that homeowners might experience and how to fix them. Even though they’re often taken for granted, garage doors are a crucial component of your home’s safety and security. But there’s no need to panic if yours has suddenly stopped functioning – here’s what you should do when you find yourself in this situation!

Replacing Panels

If one of your panels is broken, the best thing to do is replace it with a new one. Not only will this make your garage more secure, but also makes your home look nice and tidy again! Replacing your garage door panels is a great way to improve the look and feel of your home. Not only that, but it’s also a very affordable way to do so! Here are some tips on how to go about replacing them:

  • Turn off the power to your garage door opener
  • Remove the broken panels by unscrewing the hinges and pulling them off
  • Use a screwdriver to remove any nails or screws that are left hanging out of the frame
  • Check whether you need any extra tools for this specific job; if so, grab those
  • Line up the new door panel with the existing one and use a drill to screw it in
  • Turn on the power to your garage door opener, test out the new panels, and you’re good to go!

Repairing a Garage Door Hinge

Another common problem is a broken or loose hinge. Broken or loose hinges can cause your garage door to be very difficult to open. If this is the case, you’ll need to fix it as soon as possible – not only for your convenience but also for that of your neighbors! This might happen if you’re constantly opening and closing your garage door very quickly – the hinge might not be able to handle all that pressure! If this happens, here’s what you should do:

  • Use a hammer to tap the loose piece of metal back into place, so it firmly attaches itself to the frame
  • Drill screws through the existing holes to attach them properly
  • Put wood glue or silicone sealer on both surfaces (the frame and the loose piece) to hold them together more firmly

Fixing Broken Springs

Another common problem with garage doors is broken springs. These are often found near the top of the door; they’re usually long pieces of metal coiled around each other like a big spring, which helps to balance the door. If one of these breaks, you’ll probably hear a loud snapping sound when trying to open or close your garage door. Here’s what to do in this situation:

  • Turn off the power to your garage door opener to prevent injury
  • Find someone else that can help you out with lifting the broken spring pieces – they’re very heavy!  It might feel like too much for just one person
  • Use pliers to twist the separate pieces together again, so it’s in one piece again
  • Replace any bent or damaged pieces on your garage door before putting all of the old parts back up
  • Put wood glue or silicone sealer on both surfaces (the frame and the loose piece) to hold them together more firmly

Replace The Entire Garage Door

Sometimes, your garage door may sustain some more serious damage – maybe even a part of the frame has been bent or cracked. This might happen if you’ve had a minor car accident with your garage door; it’s not uncommon to find some dents in your home‘s structure after something like this happens! If this is the case, replacing them entirely might be necessary. You can stop by many stores for affordable prices on new panels, tracks, and springs. Types of garage doors include:

  • Side-hung garage door – This type of garage door is attached to the tracks with rollers on each side, making it easier to open and close.
  • Sectional garage door – This type of garage door is made out of multiple panels that slide up and down and fit into a track mounted to the ceiling.
  • Roller Door – A roller door consists of many thin metal panels that fit into a vertical track along the top edge, which makes it easy to lift. These can often give you an extra way out in case of emergencies such as Fire Shutters or earthquakes!

Troubleshooting Garage Door Openers

Garage door openers are a common way to open a garage door. However, you might have trouble using your garage door opener if it doesn’t respond when you press the button on your remote or wall control panel. If you’re opening your garage door manually (by pulling down on the handle), then several things could be causing trouble:

  • The safety release bar (usually red) was not properly set
  • The garage door opener itself needs to be re-synchronized with the safety sensors on the doors
  • If you get it serviced, make sure you get an extra remote control in case one of them breaks!

Changing The Battery On Your Remote Control

It’s always good to keep spare batteries around, whether they’re for your TV or your garage door. If the battery dies on your remote control, and you don’t have any spares lying around, you should remove the old battery by twisting it out of its compartment or using pliers, put in a new battery, and test out the remote. If you’re still having trouble with the remote after replacing its battery, then it might need to be reprogrammed. Here’s how you do this:

  • Use your garage door opener to go over the sensors/buttons on your garage door – make sure they are close enough together so that it successfully reads the different signals
  • Put one of your remotes up next to these sensors, making sure there is a clear path between them
  • Hold down the “learn” button and continue holding for at least 3 seconds (you should hear a beep)
  • After this happens, release the button and test out the remote – if it still doesn’t work, try doing this process on another remote.

We have a wide range of garage storage. If your garage door is acting up, you might have to work a bit on troubleshooting some problems. From replacing springs to fixing openers, garage doors can be a bit complicated. But if none of these tips work, it might be time to get in contact with a professional garage door service company!
