There are nearly 20,000 funeral homes across the U.S. Clearly, there are lots of decisions to be made when planning funeral services.

Whether you’re planning funerals for relatives or friends, it can be difficult to know how to plan everything. This is especially true if you’ve never done so before. So, here are our five best tips for planning a funeral this year and beyond.

1. Know All of the Elements

If your loved one left a will, it should outline how they’d like their funeral to go. But if they haven’t left instructions, it’s up to you to learn about what a funeral or cremation would entail. Then, you’ll know which services you’ll have to hire in order to make the ceremony go as you envision.

2. Consider Non-Traditional Options

Not all end-of-life ceremonies are funerals or cremations. You might find that a less common option suits your lost loved one a bit better.

For instance, aquamation is an option nowadays. This water-based process, also called alkaline hydrolysis, is an eco-friendly alternative to cremation. If your friend or family member felt passionate about environmental preservation in their lifetime, then a green send-off could fit the situation well.

3. Don’t Default to the Package Deals

It’s no secret that common funeral costs are high. That’s why funeral homes often bundle services and products into a package deal to make the process easier and cheaper.

Before you sign up for one, though, make sure you know exactly what’s included. Some might not come with a burial plot, for example, which you will need if you have a traditional funeral. However, once you know what comes with the package and you realize it fits your needs to a tee, then you might strike a great deal by opting for it.

4. Speak to Multiple Merchants

On that note, don’t just visit one funeral home or crematorium unless, of course, your loved one selected a place where they wanted to be laid to rest. Otherwise, you should check in with multiple options before deciding on one.

Shopping around is a great way to get a better price on your funeral or cremation services. You may find that one merchant offers a more complete package deal than another one. So, ask around and find the best fit for the service you imagine.

5. Take Notes

As you do all of your funeral planning, you should take some notes. Remember all of the decisions that go into the process. You can hold onto what you learn and share it with others who are going through the process for the first time, too.

And you can use this information to inform your own end-of-life planning. You may have even started considering how you might want your services to go. Write it down now to save your loved ones from having to go through all of these hoops, too.
